There are certain words and phrases that people use and overuse that have been left carrying almost no meaning. I call them neoclichés (neologisms). They may not have made it into my 1985 Cliché dictionary, but in my speech and writings 'I avoid them like the plague'.

Prohibited Words:

Exciting: This word is used so often in the B community that it should be banned. Examples: "This new process is so exciting," or "with such large prospects for growth...gosh, it is just so exciting," or "I am excited to complete another institute book." Solution: Since using this dead and lifeless crutch word amounts to blasphemy of the spirit in my opinion, I choose to use words that accurately describe the experience: 'promising', 'potential-laden', 'encouraging', or 'innovative', until these words too succumb to chronic overuse.

Dynamic: How often have we heard this word used to describe a public speaker? Examples: "A dynamic and motivating speaker," or "that was a dynamic presentation" Solution: Since this word has almost been completely stripped of its meaning, try alternatives such as 'eclectic' (drawing from different sources) or 'passionate' or 'dignified' or 'charismatic'. Lay dynamic to rest, thanks.
